The Ridgid was excellent but had a diamond arbor which limited the blades you could use. The Makita was new and it replaced the outgoing model which was well received so I went with the 5377MG. Pros: - accurate cuts - angle stop easy to set - lightweight - excellent ergonomics - nice blade included (a Makita trademark) - reinforced baseplate Cons: - no rip fence included - startup kick - heavier than a sidewinder - slightly underpowered I'm hesitant to call the saw underpowered because it's more powerful that my other equipment but I would bet that the heavier saws have more power when the saw is pushed hard. Always get the black A-94530 blade. It's sharp, lasts a long time and is coated to prevent binding. The Makita 5377MG uses a heavier duty rip fence that is gold colored. For some reason, Makita does not include a rip fence or securing screw with the 5377MG. Bought this saw for some cabinetry work. I am using it to rip 4 - 8 foot sheets of plywood lengthwise with a 140 tooth blade. Overview: A very hefty saw, the weight of it will surprise you and your arms will be sore after a day of using it. However, the handles and trigger are well designed and the saw never felt unwieldy. I also have not noticed any of the initial-start torque issues that other people have complained about. Perhaps they have corrected some of that problem with a revision to the saw design? Pros: * Perfect cuts - 8 foot cuts in plywood with a rip fence, blade never got bogged down. * Easy depth and angle adjustment * Ergonomic handle positions * Very sturdy base -- well reinforced, does not look like it would warp if dropped (although I'm not going to try it) Cons: * Heavy! * Angle adjustment could be a little more precise * Crap documentation - Bad for a novice user, experienced woodworkers will figure it out. * No bag provided. Pretty much every single tool I have bought in the last decade came with a sturdy cordura or other heavy mesh carrying bag. For some reason, Makita skimped the extra $4 of cost to provide one with a $170.00 saw... it's a bummer. Fortunately, my long dead cordless Rigid circular saw's bag fits this saw nicely.
